VOLOS
Volos stretches on the north side of Pagasitikos Bay. It is said to be the starting point for charming small trips around the province of Magnesia. Being an industrial and commercial- centre for many years it has a lot to offer, The amenities of Pagasitikos bay combined with the scenic and culinary pleasures of Pelion, really attract visitors. In the main town there are both lovely newly- constructed houses and old ones, presenting the history of the place which is dated to prehistoric times according to research. Excavations have uncovered precious findings which are kept in the local museum. Amongst others, there are the " epitimbies stiles of Dimitriados " that are vividly painted and represent original and authentic paintings of the times. In Volos museum, visitors have the opportunity to admire the great selection of pre-historic findings such as: ceramics, pottery, clays statues, stone implements and weapons. Exhibits from the classical and Roman period are also on display, It is worth seeing the remains of the old city of Dimitriados in Pagases, some 6km outside of Volos. Apart from the impressive exhibits found in this town there are excellent places to visit, offering scenic pleasure. There is a huge green park lying across the harbour where you can go for strolls by the sea. There are great sculptures by famous artists in the middle of the park. Two local picture galleries are of great interest. there is plenty to see in the colourful churches of Ayios Konstantinos, Metamorphosis and Ayios Nicolas with their beautiful icons and impressive wall paintings and mosaic on the floor. From the cultural point of view Volos has an excellent range of entertainment to offer The local theatre always has concerts of jazz music, guitar, classical concerts, great performances, painting exhibitions and dancing shows. in the daytime cheerful restaurants and tavernas compete for your time with the shops, the museum and the parks. Volos is particularly known for its "tsipouradika ", small charming places set in a marine environment, where you can sip the local "tsipouro" and taste the delicious "mezedes ". There are up to 300 "tsipouradika" spread throughout the town and along the harbour, serving fresh fish and a great variety of shellfish. At night, clubs and discotheques bring a lovely atmosphere to the city.
